John E. Sokolowski-USA TODAY Sports

Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby was the third-overall pick in the All-Star draft Thursday. His Nova Scotia neighbor and friend Nathan MacKinnon selected him. MacKinnon, the Colorado Avalanche captain, also selected Avalanche teammate Cale Makar for a star-packed team in the 3v3 tournament.

Team MacKinnon led Game 1 by two goals in the final minute but gave up two goals in 32 seconds to Team Connor McDavid, including the tying goal by McDavid, whose team won 4-3.

Team McDavid won the first-ever shootout since the NHL went to three-on-three play. And quickly, Crosby’s All-Star Game was over.

MacKinnon had two goals. Oliver Bjorkstrand had the other. Boone Jenner, David Pastrnak, and McDavid scored for Team McDavid.

Crosby had several great scoring chances, including a breakaway, but didn’t net a goal. He had two assists, including on the first goal of the game — a MacKinnon breakaway. Crosby was stopped in the shootout.
