The Dallas Stars have announced the hiring of their new head coach to replace Pete DeBoer, but in doing so, they poached him away from the Oilers' bench.

The Dallas Stars are getting reacquainted with an old friend behind the bench. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman says the Stars are finalizing a deal to bring back Glen Gulutzan as their new head coach.

It's Gulutzan's second stint with the franchise after his initial run as head coach from 2011 to 2013.

He returns to Dallas following the dismissal of Pete DeBoer, who was let go after the Stars were eliminated in the Western Conference Final.

DeBoer was the team's coach for three years, guiding them to the conference final every season but unable to reach the Stanley Cup Final.

Gulutzan was the Oilers assistant coach for the last seven seasons

Gulutzan, 53, has spent the last seven seasons as an assistant coach with the Edmonton Oilers. The Oilers played in back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals while he was in Edmonton, which once again made him a candidate to be a coach.

Gulutzan was also an assistant with the Vancouver Canucks in the past

After his initial stint with the Stars, Gulutzan spent three seasons as an assistant with the Vancouver Canucks.

Gulutzan was the head coach of the Calgary Flames too

He did get a second chance as a head coach with the Calgary Flames in 2016 but was let go in 2018 after only one playoff appearance.

Now, Gulutzan gets yet another chance at being a head coach.
