The Dallas Stars announced that captain Jamie Benn has been signed to a one-year contract extension. Per PuckPedia, the deal carries an $850K base cap hit, with $1.15MM in potential performance bonuses.
Benn can earn $200K of that bonus pool at games played checkpoints of 10, 20, and 40, and can earn $150K for making the playoffs and $100K with each playoff series victory. A season where Benn skates in at least 40 games, and ends with him lifting the Stanley Cup, will see him earn $2MM in total.
The 36-year-old, who is repped by Bayne Pettinger of Apollo Athletics, will return to the Stars to continue his legendary career with the team. Benn has captained the Stars since the 2013-14 season, and is unlikely to relinquish the responsibility until he retires.
One of the greatest players in the history of the Dallas Stars, Benn ranks No. 2 in franchise history in numerous statistical categories. He is behind only Hall of Fame center Mike Modano for the franchise lead in games played, goals, and points. He is the franchise’s all-time leader in overtime goals and is just eight points from 1,000 for his career. He ranks No. 3 in franchise history in playoff scoring, with 80 points in 126 career contests.
While a Stanley Cup championship has eluded Benn and the Stars throughout his career, he has still been able to lead the franchise on numerous deep playoff runs. Over the course of his career, Benn has led the Stars to the Western Conference Final four times, and won the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl with the team in 2020.
Benn has also collected numerous individual accolades, including an Art Ross trophy and an Olympic Gold medal. He has twice been named to the NHL’s First All-Star team and once to the second team.
Now at the tail end of his professional career, Benn has shown he can still contribute in a more limited capacity as a middle-six forward. He scored 15 goals and 36 points in 60 games played last season, but went scoreless in the team’s brief playoff run.
While he may no longer occupy a place among the Stars’ core players, and the team now counts on forwards such as Mikko Rantanen, Jason Robertson (for the time being), Wyatt Johnston, and Matt Duchene to lead the way offensively, he still occupies a central role in the team’s leadership group. If the Stars want to finally win their franchise’s second Stanley Cup – and first since 1999 – keeping Benn so he can continue as team captain will certainly help.
