NHL insider Frank Seravalli revealed the Blackhawks discussed moving the 3rd overall pick in a trade for Sabres' JJ Peterka, but it seems to have failed.

With seven days remaining before NHL free agency opens, trade rumors are heating up, and most especially between the Chicago Blackhawks and Buffalo Sabres.

On Monday's episode of 'Daily Faceoff LIVE', Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk discussed the value of Sabres center J.J. Peterka and were shocked to reveal that a rumored blockbuster involving the Blackhawks nearly happened.

Chicago is keen on acquiring Peterka, with Seravalli indicating they have even discussed giving away the No. 3 overall pick. Conversations have not gained momentum.

Seravalli pointed out Buffalo is not interested in future assets like draft picks. Instead, the Sabres want to make trades for NHL-ready players, specifically a right-shot defenseman, as they attempt to end a 14-year playoff drought.

That framework makes any pick-for-player trade hard, even for a top-three selection. Yaremchuk recommended Buffalo select the highest draft pick and then exchange their own first-round draft pick for the defender they need.

The Sabres want a big, key player immediately in return

Seravalli admitted the plan makes sense, but noted that the Sabres are still determined to acquire a big player immediately. Size and readiness for the NHL are factors, weeding out less-sized or less-ready prospects.

While the value of acquiring the No. 3 pick is significant, the Sabres have not been adequately enticed to trade Peterka.

Seravalli had made his stance clear: if the third overall selection is not sufficient to create action, then clearly anything under that won't either. The Sabres are on the verge of improving their roster today, not hoarding for the future.

Ultimately, while there have been discussions with the Blackhawks, there has not yet been any tangible forward movement. The Sabres are holding firm on their demands, and for now, Peterka remains in Buffalo.
