
The Detroit Red Wings dropped a tough one last night to the Los Angeles Kings, 3-1. There were reports yesterday that the Red Wings are searching for a number two center and a defenseman, both with term. This comes after the news of them being without defenseman Simon Edvinsson until after the Olympic break. They did however, lock up one of their defenseman today as they agreed to a three-year, $11.55 million contract extension with Ben Chairot with a $3.85 million AAV. Chiarot was set to become a free agent after this season, but the extension will keep him in Detroit through the end of the 2029 season. This season in 54 games Chiarot has 11 points on four goals and seven assists. He has posted a plus-one rating with 113 blocked shots and 109 total hits.

The Atlanta Thrashers drafted Chiarot in the fourth round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft by the Atlanta Thrashers. He made his NHL debut with the Winnipeg Jets in 2013-14 after they moved from Atlanta. He recorded his first career NHL point on December 5, 2014, and he scored his first career goal on January 3, 2015. The 34-year-old defenseman has played for four teams over his 13-year career, spending time with the Jets, Montreal Canadiens, Florida Panthers, and Red Wings. In 777 career games, he has 181 points on 49 goals and 132 assists. He’s a -57 with three power-play goals and six game-winning goals. He has 1,368 blocked shots and 1,490 total hits. In 66 career playoff games, he has a goal and seven assists. He owns a minus-two rating with 124 blocked shots and 236 total hits.
