Detroit Red Wings Name Shawn Horcoff Interim GM

The Detroit Red Wings have made Shawn Horcoff the interim GM of the franchise while it continues its search for a new permanent leader of its hockey operations department.

According to the team release, Horcoff will assume “day-to-day roster decisions, salary cap, and hockey operations personnel for the Red Wings” for as long as they wait for their long-term, permanent hire. Horcoff will retain his duties as GM of the team’s AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins, and will report to Red Wings Governor and CEO Chris Ilitch during this interim period.

Ilitch issued a statement on the decision as part of the team’s release:

As our process continues to find the best possible leader for Red Wings hockey operations, I’m appreciative of Shawn for stepping up to serve in this capacity. His knowledge of our organization and range of experience allows us to operate with a clear decision-maker in place for the season ahead, while maintaining our commitment to carry out a thorough, methodical search process on our own timeline. Shawn has my complete support, and the authority to make decisions in the best interests of our organization.

Our search has attracted significant interest in the head of hockey operations position from respected leaders across the industry, and several of those candidates, including Shawn, remain under consideration for the permanent role. Identifying and hiring the right leader is essential to our franchise’s future, and we remain committed to being deliberate and thorough in this process. We’re grateful for our players, staff, and fans for their support as we work toward this pivotal hire.

The move to elevate Horcoff on a temporary basis is not the only title change included in this announcement. Former GM Steve Yzerman will also “officially transition to the role of Senior Advisor to the Governor and CEO.” While one should be cautioned to not put too much stock into official titles, it is worth noting that Yzerman’s role officially names him as an advisor to Ilitch, rather than to the hockey operations department itself.

Other teams around the NHL often specifically tie the titles of senior advisors to the hockey operations department, such as the San Jose Sharks and Montreal Canadiens. The difference in title should not be seen as a firm indication of any specific responsibilities of Yzerman’s new role in Detroit, but it could suggest he will no longer play any major role in the team’s hockey operations work.

With Detroit’s training camp set to begin on Thursday, the Red Wings have faced renewed pressure to secure a new leader for its hockey operations department. The team still hasn’t signed RFA defenseman Simon Edvinsson, and while Edvinsson has made it clear he intends to report to camp even without a contract in place, it’s not an ideal situation for anyone involved.

Furthermore, team captain Dylan Larkin has an outstanding trade request that has not been fulfilled. Larkin, 30, is under contract at an $8.7MM AAV until the summer of 2031, meaning Detroit has no immediate obligation or need to trade Larkin.

But the team recently stripped the captaincy from Larkin, and keeping him on their roster for any extended period will not be ideal for the Red Wings. Detroit is under considerable pressure to end its league-leading playoff drought, and Larkin’s presence on the team’s roster is likely to be an unavoidable distraction until he’s traded.

That is all to say that Detroit is currently going through a period of significant organizational turmoil. The team’s next GM, whoever it may be, will in all likelihood inherit a significant number of challenges on and off the ice that need to be addressed. By naming an interim GM, Detroit has empowered one of its incumbent lead executives with the requisite authority to be able to address some of those problems while their GM search remains ongoing.

While Horcoff won’t be able to immediately alleviate the pressure the organization faces as a result of its playoff drought, he will likely be able to reach an agreement with Edvinsson on a new deal, at the very least. It remains to be seen if his newfound authority will extend to being able to find a deal for Larkin, or if Detroit would prefer that decision lie in the hands of whoever their permanent choice for the GM role will be.

In any event, this announcement is a positive development for Red Wings fans eager to see some kind of progress or movement at the top of the team’s leadership structure. While some might be disappointed that the GM search appears likely to extend for even more time still, it’s clear Detroit doesn’t want to rush into a leadership decision that has franchise-altering stakes.
