Detroit Red Wings place Christian Fischer on IR, Edvinsson among called up on emergency basis

Some notable post-holiday moves by one of the Original Six.

On Tuesday night, the Detroit Red Wings announced forward Christian Fischer is being placed on injured reserve with an undisclosed injury.

The Red Wings also called up forwards Jonatan Berggren and Austin Czarnik, along with defenseman Simon Edvinsson, from their American Hockey League affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins, on an emergency basis.

Fischer’s move to the IR is retroactive to Dec. 23, when Fischer was involved in a freaky collision with teammate Jeff Petry during Detroit’s 3-2 loss to the New Jersey Devils, the team’s final game before the holiday break.

Neither returned to the game, with Petry listed as day-to-day.

Fischer joins a growing list of Wings on the shelf. Goaltenders Alex Lyon (undisclosed) and Ville Husso (lower-body), as well as forwards Klim Kostin and Matt Luff (both undisclosed), are also on the IR.

The team has not announced a timeline for Fischer’s return to the lineup. The earliest the 26-year-old could come back would be Detroit’s New Year’s Eve clash with the Boston Bruins. In 33 games this season, Fischer has scored two goals and six assists.

He is in the middle of a one-year, $1.125 million contract with the Red Wings, after spending seven seasons with the Arizona Coyotes.

This is not the first time Fischer has been on injured reserve. While with the Coyotes during the 2021-22 season, the Chicago native was out for two weeks with an upper-body injury.

Czarnik, Berggren and Edvinsson have spent varying amounts of time up with Detroit this season. Berggren has had the most production among any player that has come up from Grand Rapids this year. In seven games, the Swedish product potted two goals and two assists, and was a on a three-game point streak before being re-assigned to the Griffins on Dec. 15.

Czarnik has just one assist in 16 games, while Edvinsson made his season debut last Saturday against the Devils.

The Red Wings (16-14-4) visit the Minnesota Wild on Wednesday night, their first game since Christmas. With just two wins in their last 10 games, they have slipped to fifth in the Atlantic Division, four points back of third. They are also three points out of a Wild Card spot.
