The Detroit Red Wings suffered a 3-1 loss to the Panthers last night. They lost more than the game, as their captain, Dylan Larkin, sustained an injury. Following the game, Red Wings head coach Todd McLellan said he didn’t think Larkin would be out long-term, but he needed to be fully evaluated. This morning, Detroit recalled prospect Michael Brandsegg-Nygård from Grand Rapids in the AHL.

Brandsegg-Nygård appeared in nine games for the Red Wings to start the season recording an assist and was a minus-five. In 50 games at Grand Rapids, he has 37 points on 16 goals and 21 assists. He’s a +24 with five power-play goals and six game-winning goals. Brandsegg-Nygård has been red hot recording nine points in his last five games on six goals and three assists. Last night’s game snapped his four-game point streak. He also has a goal in six of his last eight games with the Griffins.
The call-up also comes after Dominik Shine was assigned to Grand Rapids so he would be allowed to play in the Calder Cup playoffs if necessary and the movement of Elmer Soderblom to the Penguins. The Red Wings also acquired David Perron from the Senators on Thursday night.
Perron is about two weeks away from returning barring a setback so the recall of Branssgg-Nygård gives them depth in the NHL.
Brandsegg-Nygard made his debut with the Red Wings organization last season appearing in two regular season games with the Griffins. He was a minus-one. In the Calder Cup Playoff games, he had two goals and an assist; he was a plus-one.
The Red Wings face the New Jersey Devils tomorrow. It’ll be interesting to see if Brandsegg-Nygård is inserted into the lineup for the game and what the lineup will look like, as Detroit tries to push for the playoffs.
