The New Jersey Devils have been in the news across the NHL of late, mainly due to rumors around star defenseman Dougie Hamilton. There have been all sorts of speculations that New Jersey could look to trade the star defenseman away, in part due to salary issues.

If the Devils were to trade Hamilton, they would surely require a large return for the star. But it seems that the rumors have been subject to some criticism.

Some people have wondered if the Devils would actually trade away Hamilton, especially with the team contending for a Stanley Cup. Hamilton has been a massive part of the Devils' plan, and moving him could cripple the defensive unit.

But Hamilton is getting up there in age, and he has a lengthy contract remaining. NHL writer Lyle Richardson of Bleacher Report believes that the rumors around Hamilton are legit.

"Friedman believes the chances are low that Hamilton is traded. Nevertheless, the change in his trade protection gives the Devils several possible trade partners that could be in the market for an experienced top-two, puck-moving defenseman. Some of them could be among the 13 clubs with over $10 million in cap room," Richardson wrote.

Hamilton scored nine goals and 31 assists for the Devils last season over 64 games played. The veteran still has three more years on his current deal and is scheduled to make $9 million each season.

This is a large contract for the Devils, especially with his production seemingly declining. But there could be a team that beleives they are one piece away from really contending for a title, and this could open the door for a potential trade.

For now, Hamilton will remain a part of the Devils' 2025-26 plans. But as all trade talks are, things remain very fluid on all fronts.
