Devils' Jack Hughes Doesn't Hold Back on Possible Brothers Reunion
Bob Frid-USA TODAY Sports

New Jersey Devils forward Jack Hughes spoke candidly on Tuesday about his desire to play alongside both of his brothers, calling it an obvious goal for the Hughes family as contract timelines continue to line up.

“Honestly, I’m not afraid to say it. Yeah, I would love for Quinn to — eventually I’d love to play with him,” Hughes said at the NHL/NHLPA player media tour, via TSN’s Pierre LeBrun. “And whether that’s in New Jersey or at what time that takes, at some point, I want to play with Quinn.

“But yeah, that’s the question going around. They talk all day about it up in Vancouver, you know? But yeah, I’d love to play with Quinn at some point.”

Hughes is signed with the Devils through 2030, while his younger brother Luke remains a restricted free agent after three NHL seasons, two of them as a full-time Devils player.

Devils general manager Tom Fitzgerald has already signaled confidence that Luke’s extension will be signed before training camp.

“We’ll just continue to talk and present each other with ideas,” Fitzgerald said at the start of September. “Eventually, this will get done. The 11th hour is training camp, right? A lot of times, a lot of the stuff doesn’t get done until the 11th hour.

“We’re hoping we can get something done here in quick fashion, and both sides are working hard at it.”

The third brother, Quinn, is the Vancouver Canucks’ captain and under contract until 2027. He becomes eligible for an extension in 2026, but speculation has long linked him to the Devils, given his repeated references to playing with his siblings.

Even Canucks president Jim Rutherford admitted in April that the topic is unavoidable and will be for the time being until Quinn signs a long-term extension to remain with the Canucks.

“He’s said before he wants to play with his brothers, and that would be partly out of our control — in our control if we brought his brothers here," Rutherford said. "So, there's many moving parts.”
