A returning player looks to be heading back to the minors.
On Wednesday, the New Jersey Devils placed forward Marc McLaughlin on waivers. While he becomes available to the other 31 teams in the NHL, the 26-year-old was put on the wire for the purpose of the Devils assigning him to their American Hockey League affiliate, the Utica Comets.

McLaughlin has yet to play a game this season after suffering an undisclosed injury in a preseason game against the New York Islanders on Sept. 26. He ended up missing the remainder of training camp and the first four months of the 2025-26 regular season as a result.
The North Billerica, Mass. native came to the Garden State last March, as he was traded to the Devils by the Boston Bruins just ahead of the trade deadline. He ended up playing two games with his new team, posting an assist against his former team on April 15.
In total, McLaughlin played 14 games in the NHL during the 2024-25 campaign, scoring two goals and an assist for three points. It was the most appearances he’s had in the NHL in a single season. In 50 games in the AHL last year, spending time with both the Comets and Providence Bruins, he notched five goals and 15 assists for 20 points.
McLaughlin re-signed with the Devils back on July 1, agreeing to a one-year, two-way contract for this season. The deal has a cap hit of $775,000.
In 28 NHL appearances, McLaughlin has scored six goals and seven points. In 185 regular-season contests in the AHL, he has posted 26 goals and 38 assists for 64 points, adding a goal in eight Calder Cup Playoff games.
Alongside his pro career, McLaughlin had a solid run at Boston College, captaining the team for two seasons. He also represented the United States at the 2022 Winter Olympics.
