It was no surprise when the Buffalo Sabres traded Devon Levi over the summer. The Oilers were desperate for a goalie, and the Sabres were cutting bait on a prospect that just didn’t work out.
But it’s been Levi’s roller coaster season that has put Buffalo in a bit of awkward spot.
Levi got off to a disastrous start in Edmonton, giving up seven goals to the Vancouver Canucks in a 9-7 slugfest win by the Oilers.
All of the questions about why the Sabres dumped Levi were reinforced, seemingly making it clear that the organization had made the right decision.
But then, the Oilers seemed to tighten up around Levi, actually playing fairly decent defensive hockey in front of him. And that change allowed Levi to seemingly flourish in Edmonton. Following the awful debut, the 24-year-old surrendered two goals against the Anaheim Ducks in a 5-2 win, then gave up one in a 4-1 win over the LA Kings.
Those results called the Sabres’ decision to trade Levi into question. And considering the uncertainty behind Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, the calls are justified. Then again, Levi’s latest performances and the feeling of seller’s remorse dampened a bit.
Levi allowed three goals in a 4-2 loss to the Utah Mammoth, and another three in a 4-3 overtime win over the Minnesota Wild.
Then, splat.
Levi coughed up five tallies against the Carolina Hurricanes in a wild game that ended in a 6-5 win for the Oilers.
The next day, the club announced that Levi hit the shelf with an undisclosed injury.
Oilers have not indicated what the injury is or how long Levi is out, but Babcock said they are calling up a goalie to backup Jarry Saturday. And a D-man, with Ekholm (concussion) out of the lineup. https://t.co/fIpjgSDZzT

As Jason Gregor noted, there is no timeline for his return. Even on the shelf, fans might question why Levi didn’t find the sort of success he’s had this season in Buffalo.
The seller’s remorse the Sabres might feel should come with a grain of salt. Even with the two solid starts earlier this season, Levi’s numbers are hardly Earth-shattering.
In seven games this season, Levi is 6-1-0 with a 3.11 GAA and an .887 SV%. He’s got those six wins just because the Oilers’ offense has been able to paper over some bad games.
Levi’s seven-goal debut should have been a blowout loss. Instead, the Oilers rallied to win a defense-less game.
Likewise, their 6-5 win over the Stanley Cup champion Hurricanes was one the Oilers should not have won. But they caught the Carolina in a rare off-night and managed to come away with two points.
Those sorts of efforts might not have held up too well in Buffalo. And it’s not that the Sabres are significantly inferior to the Oilers. It’s just that the Sabres are not a team built to paper over dismal defensive performances with overwhelming offensive firepower.
The bottom line is that Levi will actually have to win something in order to prove the Sabres may be the wrong choice. Sure, some seller’s remorse might be swirling in the back of Jarmo Kekalainen’s mind, but he’s not likely losing any sleep.
