Did Connor McDavid hint at likely landing spot if he leaves Edmonton?

Connor McDavid is still all in on the Edmonton Oilers, but some are beginning to wonder for how long. After another disappointing loss on Saturday night, the Oilers captain was quite vocal about how well the Tampa Bay Lightning are coached. At the same time, he seemed to throw a bit of shade at his own coach.

“They got a great system. They’re perfectly coached. They all know what they’re doing all over the ice. It’s impressive. They are a great team,” said McDavid. Without being prompted, he added again, “They’re extremely well coached, they’re extremely well organized. They’re very very rehearsed in everything that they do. It’s very impressive, and when you do break them down, they’ve got a heck of a goalie to backstop them.”

When asked if the Oilers are where they want to be, and if not, how to get there. McDavid responded, “That’s a coaching question you can ask Knobber that question. Obviously we’ve been play together a long time and we feel like we’re somewhat rehearsed and organized, but not to their level.”

These are fairly scathing comments. When Knoblauch was asked, he didn’t seem to sure what to say. He took a while before answering and finally said, “I don’t think so. I think the organization is fine.” He added, “We’ve got a lot of new players right now with the injuries that we have; we’ve got some turnover. I think they had, obviously, Hedman being out. They’ve been together a long time, their group. Our core guys have been together a long time too, so you know, when things are going well, things look organized…”

Does This Hint at McDavid Connecting with Cooper?

These comments may mean very little. It might just be that a frustrated McDavid is pointing out that his current team feels like they’re not gelling and if they’re going to be successful, they need to be more like Tampa, the team that just beat them.

Then again, given the recent history with Cooper (at the Olympics and 4 Nations), McDavid and the Tampa coach have developed a solid relationship. Cooper was glowing in his praise of McDavid ahead of Saturday’s game. “Connor’s got a special place in my heart. It’s been a pleasure coaching Canada. It sucked (not winning a gold medal) for all of us, but especially for him.

McDavid becomes a free agent at the end of the 2027-28 season. By then, the salary cap will be plenty high enough to accommodate salaries for several star players, and Nikita Kucherov and McDavid on the same team, under Cooper, could be magic. McDavid has already shown he’s willing to take a discount for a chance to win. It’s logical to assume he’d do so again to join a team with no state tax, and one of the favorites in the Eastern Conference.
