Don Cherry Blasts Oilers Goalie Stuart Skinner in Unfiltered Rant

Stuart Skinner has been under fire for his play in the Stanley Cup Finals, and now Don Cherry has fired a major shot at the Edmonton Oilers goaltender.

The Edmonton Oilers played well throughout the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but when it mattered most, the team fell apart, and one key reason for that was their goaltending struggles against the Florida Panthers.

While not all the blame can be sent Stuart Skinner's way, it's safe to say that he underperformed mightily in that series, posting a save percentage under .880 in each of the final four games against Florida.

He's been hearing criticism on social media from every angle since last Tuesday, and now, Sportsnet icon Don Cherry has weighed in too, taking a major shot at the 26-year old.

'Skinner never stole a game. You're absolutely right. He's got to be the outstanding player in one game, and he wasn't.'

While Skinner certainly battled hard throughout the post-season, putting up several shutouts as the Oilers rolled through Los Angeles, Vegas and Dallas, his play when it mattered most just wasn't up to scratch, and it's hard to argue with Cherry on his assessment of the situation.

Heading into the summer, it's no secret that this team needs to re-tool in net, with NHL reporter Frank Corrado noting that they need to make a change this off-season, citing John Gibson as a major option.

'It has to be the goaltending Given the way things have gone the last couple years-and we'll say this-it's not that goaltending lost them the Stanley Cup, but you've gone into situations where you haven't had the save at the right time in the big moment.'

On another team, Skinner may thrive as he is just 26-years of age with plenty of time to grow in the league, but right now, he's just not the fit for Edmonton in net, and after Don Cherry's scathing review of his play in the Finals, it's safe to say that a change is coming.
