Don Cherry is someone who is constantly giving his opinion on the world of hockey, especially Canadian teams like the Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Cherry may not be on Coach's Corner anymore, but he still gets to give commentary on his podcast, 'Don Cherry's Grapevine.' The show is officially back for a new season, and he is looking to give his signature hot takes on all of the biggest issues and topics facing the league.
One topic that he dove into on his latest episode involves none other than the Toronto Maple Leafs. In the offseason, the team made the controversial decision to rid John Tavares of the Captaincy and to give it to Auston Matthews. This is one of those decisions that elicits a lot of reactions. While Cherry had been fairly quiet on the issue, he has now made his opinion clear. Ultimately, he believes something is deeply wrong with the Leafs.
'It is a slap in the face, I don't care what anybody says. To take the captaincy off of one player and give it to another, there's something wrong somewhere. It's all up to Matthews now.'
This is a pretty measured yet strong take from Cherry. He has always loved the Canadian players. So it should come as no surprise that he would defend Tavares. Either way, this is a decision that the Leafs are going to have to stand on, moving forward. Only time will tell if it pays off.
