The Adirondack Thunder and Maine Mariners kicked off a home-and-home series on Friday Night. Prior to puck drop, the Adirondack Thunder announced Ryan Wheeler as the eighth captain in franchise history, with Jacob Graves and Justin Taylor both wearing an “A” for the Thunder.
“It’s definitley an honor, definitley humbled for the oppurunity there’s a lot of guys in there that have a lot of games played like Sal and Gravy and Tails and I think having them by my side will be a great leadership together”

Adirondack would get on the board first as Brannon McManus made a nice move and an even nicer shot to beat Luke Cavallin to give the Thunder the 1-0 lead just under halfway through the opening period. Despite trailing 1-0 after the opening frame, the Mariners were the better team. In the second, the Mariners continued to dominate the play. Halfway through the middle frame, Tyler Brennan would make a massive save to keep the Mariners off the board, and Adirondack would ever so slightly take their one-goal lead into the third period. Maine finally broke through Brennan at the 4:51 mark as Brooklyn Kalimikov fed Jacob Perreault for his third of the season. Both teams would get chances in the final five minutes. However, neither team would be able to find the back of the net, and we headed to overtime.
“Absoultey, Brenner was huge for us, we might not have deserved that without him. He was great and backed us up and we got a point”

In the OT frame, the Thunder got the best chance of the extra frame, which came on a Jeremy Hanzel breakaway attempt. Adirondack would double up the Mariners in shots in the OT period, 6-3, as we would head to a shootout. Brannon McManus would score in the opening round, but it would be Brooklyn Kalmikov in the second round, and Xander Laampa in the seventh round, which would send Maine to Portland with the extra two points.
Adirondack will head to Maine for the backend of a home-and-home with puck drop slated for 6:05 as Jeremy Brodeur is expected to make his season debut with the Thunder. Head Coach Sylvain Cloutheir also mentioned that everyone who is healthy will make the trip, with some possible lineup changes tomorrow. After Maine, the Thunder will head to Norfolk to play a three-in-three series with the Admirals next weekend.
