Earlier today, the Greensboro Gargoyles announced that they have agreed to an ECHL deal with defenseman Kenny Johnson. They also traded defenseman Gabe Blanchard to the Worcester Railers in exchange for future considerations.

Background

Kenny Johnson is a defenseman with three years of ECHL experience and four more at the prestigious Penn State University. Johnson also has some serious hockey pedigree as his brother is Jack Johnson of the Columbus Blue Jackets. Kenny, however, is not Jack and will be carving his own path through stone. The defenseman is 6’4 and has a strong physical presence. Johnson’s most action-packed season at Penn State University saw him play in 31 games, notching a goal and four assists. After the Michigan native’s time at Penn State was done, he made his professional debut in the ECHL.

His first pro season was split between the Wheeling Nailers and the Orlando Solar Bears. During his time there, he appeared in seven games and scored a goal for the Solar Bears. The 2022-2023 season saw Johnson earn significant playing time, appearing in 46 games, scoring a goal, and adding 10 assists for the Reading Royals. Most recently, Johnson split the 2024-2025 season between Reading and the Allen Americans. During that campaign, he appeared in 32 games, scoring a goal and adding three assists.

Impact on Greensboro

First and foremost, the Gargoyles just added some significant depth to the blueline. By adding Johnson, they have brought in a smart defensive player who is responsible in his own zone. Johnson is a big-bodied player, and as the Gargoyles don’t have a ton of size, the addition of Johnson should help the team avoid being pushed around. Greensboro has been trying to build its identity as a hardworking, intelligent team, and Johnson fits that profile perfectly. Another point of emphasis for Head Coach Scott Burt has been getting experienced players in the lineup, which the Johnson signing also accomplishes. The Gargoyles will be back in action against Wheeling this Friday and then return home on the 17th to face the Ghost Pirates.
