The ECHL Department of Player Safety has suspended Kalamazoo Wings defenseman Powell Connor five games and fined an undisclosed amount for his actions in Sunday’s game vs Iowa Heartlanders. The Kalamazoo defenseman would come to the defense of his teammate after the final whistle and started throwing haymakers at Iowa’s Jaxon Nelson. He would be assessed a minor for roughing along with a game misconduct for leaving the players bench. Connor, 25, has a goal and an assist in five games this season. The Chilliwack, British Columbia, native began his career with the Reading Royals, where he had three goals and three assists for six points in 30 games. He is eligible to return on January 24th vs Toledo Walleye.
Connor began his career in the BCHL, where he spent time with the Chilliwack Chiefs and Trail Smoke Eaters. In 201 BCHL games, he put up 13 goals and 62 assists for 75 points. He would add two goals and seven assists for nine points in 46 playoff games. During his final season with the Smoke Eaters, he would be tied for the team lead among defensemen in goals. Connor also wore a letter during the 2019-20 season.
After finishing his junior career, Connor took the NCAA route, spending his first three seasons at Michigan State University. In 49 games with the Spartans, he had one assist. He would spend his final year of eligibility at Canisius College, where he had a goal and six assists for seven points in 35 games.
