The Reading Royals have announced that they’ve hired Bruce Coles as the 25th assistant coach in franchise history. This will be the first coaching job for the La Salle, Quebec native. Coles becomes the second assistant coach on the Reading bench, joining Wes Wolfe, who was hired earlier this Summer. This is the first time since the 2023-24 season that the Royals have had two assistant coaches

Prior to coaching, Coles spent the majority of his ECHL career with the Johnstown Chiefs, where he put up 106 goals and 121 assists for 227 points in 132 games. He would add four goals and five assists for nine points in 14 playoff games. During his time in the ECHL, he also played with the Winston-Salem Thunder and the Baton Rouge Thunder. In 168 ECHL games, he put up 116 goals and 143 assists for 259 points. He was originally drafted by the Montreal Canadiens 23rd overall in the 1990 Supplemental Draft.

“I’m beyond excited to be joining the team as assistant coach,” Coles stated. “This is an incredible opportunity. I want to thank Coach Peters and the Reading Royals organization. I can’t wait to get started working with the players and developing relationships with the staff and the city of Reading. I am looking forward to the upcoming season.”

In 248 career AHL games, he would put up 92 goals and 130 assists for 222 points. Coles would put up nine goals and 15 assists for 24 points in 38 Calder Cup Playoff games. In 1998, he won a Calder Cup Championship with the Phantoms, also scoring the winning goal in the clinching game. He played in 27 games at the international level with Team Canada during the 1992-93 season, where he put up nine goals and 22 assists for 31 points.
