There will be fewer players taking part in the Edmonton Oilers pre-season training camp now. These cuts are the first of many and should also give a clearer view of who may be first-time Oilers come opening season.
It was just announced that the Edmonton Oilers have reassigned forwards Tommy Lafreniere (Kamloops Blazers) and David Lewandowski (Saskatoon Blades) to their respective WHL clubs.

Tommy Lafreniere was drafted in this most recent 2025 NHL draft in the third round, 83rd overall. The 2007-born forward is a strong two-way presence with a high compete level, physicality, and defensive senses. He posted 56 points across 68 games last year on the rebuilding Blazers.
One area he looks to show some growth in this upcoming season with the Blazers will be his offensive awareness, and finishing ability. Lafreniere had a promising showing at the Oilers rookie camp with the Oilers.
As one of the youngest prospects in the organization, the young Canadian winger is still a handful of years away from competing for a full time NHL roster spot.
Lewandowski was also a recent addition to the contending Oilers with their 4th round, 117th overall pick in the 2025 NHL draft. The 6’01 winger possesses high end senses, strong physicality, and quality shooting. He posted 39 points across 51 games last year in Saskatoon.
Skating and timing look to be two elements that Lewandowski will further improve in this upcoming WHL campaign.
David Lewandowski also had a productive first rookie camp in Alberta. The German winger looks to build momentum in his second full season in North American hockey with the Saskatchewan based blades.
With the WHL season starting this past friday, fans can expect both of these players to appear soon with their junior clubs.
