None of these moves should surprise anyone. With just one game remaining in preseason action, the team needed to make major cuts to its roster, and these eight players were the extras in the lineup. The one player who did look exceptional was Clattenburg, who was like a human wrecking ball throughout camp. He is looking like an exceptional find and someone who could play NHL minutes as early as this season.
There is a small chance that Cam Dineen gets claimed on waivers, but it is hard to see. He’s a very good AHLer, having put up 43 points in 59 games. However, the 27-year-old has never really shown much at the NHL level. Most teams have their own tweeners as it is and do not need a player like him.
The team now has 15 forwards and eight defencemen left in camp, and will need to cut down at least one more time to be cap compliant. This does not include the injured Zach Hyman. He is currently expected back in November.
The one area the team does not need to make a move currently is in net, with Stuart Skinner and Cal Pickard expected to start in the NHL. The team also has Connor Ingram in the AHL, should they need him.
The Oilers play in Vancouver against the Canucks on Friday at eight pm MDT. This will be their last preseason game before beginning the regular season at home against the Calgary Flames on October 8th.
