The cuts are coming now as the preseason moves along. Following a commanding 4–0 win over the Winnipeg Jets on Friday evening, the Edmonton Oilers made a few more cuts to the roster, bringing us even closer to an opening night roster.
Forward Roby Jarventie and defender Josh Brown have been placed on waivers while forward Viljami Marjala and goaltender Samuel Jonsson have been assigned to the Bakersfield Condors.

Despite some Oilers fans joking about winning the Xavier Bourgault/Roby Jarventie trade last offseason when Bourgault was placed on waivers earlier this week by the Ottawa Senators, including some considering picking him up on waivers to truly win the trade, Jarventie has now been placed on waivers himself to have him sent down to the Bakersfield Condors. He did not stand out in his appearances thus far, which is not surprising given him basically missing an entire season due to injury.
Josh Brown was, well, Josh Brown. The defence is far too deep at this point for him ever to see another game in an Oilers uniform.
On the other side of things, Viljami Marjala should and probably could see NHL action very soon. He had an impressive rookie camp, training camp, and preseason. So good, in fact, that he made a list of potential dark horse candidates to make the opening night roster. His drive and versatility were on show, and he should be very high on the call-up list once we get into the season.
Samuel Jonsson may be the goalie of the future. And there is no reason to rush him that quickly. Jonsson technically may have won the training camp rookie goalie battle, as he was sent down one day later than his counterpart Nathaniel Day. But the battle will continue on in the minor leagues as these two try to earn a chance in the NHL.
