The Edmonton Oilers have signed valuable depth for their blue line, inking defenseman Riley Stillman to a contract on the 1st day of NHL Free Agency.

On the opening day of the NHL's free agency period, the Edmonton Oilers have secured some valuable depth for their blue line after losing John Klingberg to the San Jose Sharks.

They've agreed to terms with defenseman Riley Stillman, who spent this year split between the Carolina Hurricanes and their AHL affiliate, the Chicago Wolves.

Stillman, who is the son of former 2x Stanley Cup-winning NHL forward Cory Stillman, was taken with the 114th pick in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft by the Florida Panthers, a club his father played for.

Eventually getting playing time with the Panthers, they became the first father and son duo to have played for the same franchise.

In April 2021, the Panthers traded Sillman along with Brett Connolly, the rights to Henrik Borgstrom, and a 2021 7th round draft pick to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Lucas Carlsson and Lucas Wallmark.

He then signed a 3-year extension to remain with the Blackhawks, where he would play until being once again traded, this time to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for Jason Dickinson and a 2nd round pick in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft.

Stillman once again found himself on the move in 2023, getting traded to the Buffalo Sabres for prospect Josh Bloom. Last July, he signed a 1-year, 2-way contract with the Hurricanes.

Just as his father did with the Hurricanes, whom he helped win the Stanley Cup in 2006, the younger Stillman wore sweater No. 61 as a tribute to him.

He's played in 163 career NHL games and has 26 points (4G, 22A).
