Edmonton Oilers Urged to Trade for 40 Goal Scorer From Divisional Rival

The Edmonton Oilers have already landed two new forwards for next season, but now they've been urged by a top analyst to target Seattle's Jared McCann.

After another disappointing finish in the Stanley Cup Finals, the Edmonton Oilers roster has already undergone plenty of changes, with the team adding Andrew Mangiapane and Isaac Howard to replace the likes of Corey Perry, Viktor Arvidsson and Connor Brown, all of whom were either traded or departed in free agency.

For the most part, it seems as though the Oilers off-season business is over, with their team set to lineup with their current group for the 2025/26 regular season, but there's still plenty of time for them to make a surprise deal.

Now, Jesse Courville-Lynch of The Hockey News has proposed a pickup that would solve most of their issues, noting the desire of the Seattle Kraken to trade Jared McCann as an option for Edmonton to pick up a massive upgrade to their forward group.

In McCann, the Oilers would get a 29-year old with 91 goals over the past three seasons surrounded by a very mediocre forward group, with a career high of 40 goals playing for Seattle back in the 2022/23 season.

As Lynch notes, it's very unlikely that they have the pieces to get it done, but after the recent trades from Seattle we've seen, it would be worth it for Edmonton to try and make a move, as McCann would give them the star winger they need alongside either of their top centres.

Ultimately, the Oilers are potentially done making big swings this off-season unless it's for a goaltending upgrade, and with the desire to upgrade in net, it's unlikely they'll push for a trade for someone like McCann, but if they did, it would be a major upgrade for this team.
