Nurse has a contract until 2029-30 with a $9.25 million cap hit and is entering his 12th season with the Oilers. The 30-year-old scored five goals and 33 points in 76 regular-season games, and three goals and eight points in 22 playoff games.
Selected seventh overall at the 2013 draft, he has played 716 games with 81 goals and 300 points.
The Oilers began clearing cap room this week, trading Evander Kane to the Canucks for a fourth-round selection. TSN's Pierre LeBrun reports they're trying to trade Victor Arvidsson to create another $4 million of room as well.
That space is significant with Edmonton having to sign RFA Evan Bouchard and extend Connor McDavid this offseason.
TSN insider Ryan Rishaug says the Oilers need a top-six winger to skate with McDavid or Leon Draisaitl, if they can clear enough cap space.
While goaltending is a concern, the team is not reported to be in any rush to act after consecutive Stanley Cup Final appearances with Stuart Skinner.
In terms of Connor Brown, he appears destined for free agency after two seasons in Edmonton.
The 31-year-old winger had 13 goals and 30 points in 82 games this season and contributed five goals and nine points in the postseason. He's finishing up a one-year, $1 million deal.
Corey Perry, Kasperi Kapanen, Jeff Skinner, and defenceman John Klingberg are also UFAs this summer as the Oilers prepare for a busy offseason.
