The Dallas Stars are facing salary cap pressure and long-term roster questions, but Elliotte Friedman's report makes clear that Ilya Lyubushkin is staying put for now.
Trade rumours around the Dallas Stars' blue line picked up this summer, but Elliotte Friedman's latest report made the team's stance clear: Ilya Lyubushkin is staying put.
Even with Dallas navigating a tight salary cap picture, Friedman explained that the 31-year-old veteran is viewed internally as a steadying presence, not as a contract to shed.
Analysts at House of Hockey echoed the same message, highlighting how Dallas sees Lyubushkin's role as more valuable on the ice than on the trade market.
Last season, Lyubushkin averaged just over 17 minutes a night in a third-pairing role, providing depth and stability rather than flash. With Matt Dumba and Cody Ceci gone, however, Dallas may lean on him more heavily on the right side.
That could create a tricky situation, since his effectiveness has typically come with more limited minutes.
Still, his $3.25 million cap hit is manageable for the next two seasons, especially if he anchors younger defensemen such as Nils Lundkvist.
If Lundkvist or another prospect steps forward, Lyubushkin's usage could balance out, but for now, he's penciled in as an important part of the rotation.
The bigger question is what happens beyond this season. Jason Robertson's next contract looms, Thomas Harley and Mavrik Bourque are due for raises, and Jamie Benn's future still needs clarity.
If Dallas needs space, Lyubushkin's deal could become a movable piece down the road. His numbers and usage trends can be tracked directly on NHL.com, and they show why he remains a reliable if unspectacular part of the lineup.
Personally, I think Dallas is making the right call by keeping him for now. Stability on the back end is crucial for a contender, and Lyubushkin gives them that. But if younger players push through, his contract might turn into the first lever Jim Nill pulls to open cap space in 2026.
