For many in the hockey world, the winter season is a time where schedules get a little less hectic and everyone gets a chance to relax. That’s not the case for Calgary Flames assistant general manager (and vice-president of hockey operations) Brad Pascall, who’s taking time off from his duties running the Calgary Wranglers… by running Canada’s entry at the upcoming Spengler Cup.
Pascall will be serving as co-general manager alongside NHL great Joe Thornton. Pascall’s an experienced hockey executive – in addition to over a decade with the Flames, he’s worked extensively with Hockey Canada since his playing days ended – and so he seems like the ideal type of person to work with Thornton as he dips his toes into the executive and managerial side of things. It’s the second year in a row where Pascall is spending his break at the Spengler Cup.
If you’re unfamiliar with the Spengler Cup… well, it’s a very odd tournament, which makes it a total blast. Held every year between Dec. 26-31, it’s hosted by HC Davos in their home rink in Davos, Switzerland and features six teams from throughout Europe. In addition to Canada’s entry and the hosts, this year’s Spengler features Karpat from Finland, HC Fribourg-Gotteron from Switzerland, HC Dynamo Pardubice from Czechia, and the Straubing Tigers from Germany.
Because the tournament takes place during a break in the European calendar, typically the Team Canada’s entry features a selection of Canadians playing in Europe… as well as a smattering of players from North American minor pro. Last season’s team featured three AHLers – Ty Smith, Nicolas Beaudoin and Dillon Heatherington – along with college prospect Massimo Rizzo. The remainder of the roster was primarily players from Swiss teams.
It’s kind of fun that Pascall gets this type of opportunity, and he’ll be joined by Wranglers equipment manager Peter Bureaux and Flames team physician Dr. Jim Thorne. At worst, it’s a fun diversion during the winter holidays. But considering the quality of players in Europe these days, it’s also a chance for Pascall to potentially get a first-hand look at some players that could find themselves with the Flames or Wranglers in the future.
