The Calgary Flames made defenceman MacKenzie Weegar a late scratch prior to their game against the New York Islanders on Saturday afternoon due to a lower-body injury, the club announced.
Weegar, 31, has been highly productive in his third year with the Flames, collecting 41 points (seven goals, 34 assists) through 68 games. The right-handed defenceman has also averaged a career-high 23:53 of ice time per game with the Flames this season and is a team-leading +14.
With Weegar suddenly unavailable, the Flames ultimately dressed both Daniil Miromanov and Brayden Pachal for their matinee clash against the Islanders on Sunday. Matt Coronato and Bo Horvat both scored before the midway mark of the first period at UBS Arena.

The Flames originally acquired Weegar from the Florida Panthers as part of the blockbuster Matthew Tkachuk trade in July 2022. Under former GM Brad Treliving, the club subsequently signed Weegar to an eight-year contract extension carrying a $6.25 million cap hit.
Weegar spent his junior career with the Halifax Mooseheads and was originally selected by the Panthers in the seventh round (No. 206 overall) of the 2013 NHL Draft. After making his NHL debut with the Panthers in the 2016-17 season, Weegar gradually established himself as a regular (and, later, a top player) in Florida.
Through 537 career NHL games with the Panthers and Flames, Weegar has collected 58 goals and 245 points, as well as 384 penalty minutes. He has also appeared in 20 playoff games, all with Florida, recording one goal and five points.
The Flames currently occupy 10th place in the Western Conference with a 32-25-11 record and 75 points through 68 games this season. They have won back-to-back games and are slated to return home to play the Seattle Kraken and Dallas Stars after wrapping up their road trip on Long Island.
