The Calgary Flames were victorious on Tuesday evening, beating the Montreal Canadiens in overtime by a 3-2 score. But they finished the game down a player, as forward Anthony Mantha left the game after the first period with an apparent lower body injury.
Mantha played six shifts for 5:06 of ice time in the first period, playing on a line with Jonathan Huberdeau and Yegor Sharangovich. But Mantha was seemingly injured late in the period in a collision with Canadiens forward Emil Heineman behind the Montreal net.
Habs Eyes on the Prize’s Matt Drake shared a clip of the play on social media during the game, with Mantha’s right leg appearing to get caught underneath him as he fell to the ice:

Mantha didn’t play a shift in the last two periods of the game, and the Flames announced on social media that he been ruled out for the remainder of the game. Flames head coach Ryan Huska was asked about Mantha in his post-game media address, and indicated he had no update on his status.
The 30-year-old Mantha is a left shot forward that signed the Flames as an unrestricted free agent this past summer on a one-year deal with a $3.5 million cap hit. He’s played primarily in the top three forward lines and has shown flashes of brilliance when he’s used his size and mobility effectively, and he’s four goals and seven points over 13 games so far this season. But he was also briefly demoted by Huska to the fourth line, as he didn’t quite play to the standard the coaching staff expected. Most recently, he scored a deflection goal against Edmonton and served as a screen on Stuart Skinner on Calgary’s other goal in Sunday’s 4-2 loss to the Oilers.
The Flames are scheduled to practice on Wednesday at 11 a.m. MT (1 p.m. local time) in Boston ahead of Thursday’s game with the Bruins, so we may get an update on Mantha’s status at that point. The Flames are carrying a 23-man roster and had three healthy scratches for Tuesday’s game in Montreal: forward Kevin Rooney and defencemen Jake Bean and Joel Hanley. We’ll see if any of them are pressed into service on Thursday night in Boston.
