Flames Have Incredibly Bright Future Despite Draft Lottery Disappointment

It was a result Calgary Flames fans didn’t want to see, but one that many felt was inevitable. The Flames entered Tuesday’s draft lottery with a 9.5 per cent chance of landing the first-overall pick. Instead, they slid back two spots and will have the sixth-overall selection this June.

This continues an ugly trend for the Flames, who have never had a top-three pick in franchise history. Their highest pick to date came in 2014, when they took Sam Bennett with the fourth-overall selection. The last time they selected sixth overall, they selected a star talent in Matthew Tkachuk back in 2015. In other words, while falling to sixth is disappointing, it’s not the end of the world.

What’s important for the Flames is that they hit on this pick. Under general manager (GM) Craig Conroy, they have added some excellent prospects thanks to the work of their scouting staff. Based on what we’ve seen so far, there should be plenty of optimism that they will hit on this pick as well.

Flames Loaded with Prospects

Though the Flames still don’t have a true game-changing prospect up front, that doesn’t mean the future isn’t bright in Calgary. We saw some of what the future holds this season, as players like Zayne Parekh, Matvei Gridin, Hunter Brzustewicz, and even Yan Kuznetsov were able to play meaningful minutes and are only going to continue to get better.

That is far from the only young talent the Flames have, either. Goaltender Dustin Wolf has yet to hit his prime at the age of 24, nor has 23-year-old Matt Coronato. It’s also important not to forget Sam Honzek, who was really starting to look comfortable in the Flames lineup before suffering a season-ending injury in November. Even Connor Zary, despite some struggles in 2025-26, is still just 24.

Meanwhile, the Flames also loaded up with two centres in the first round of last year’s draft with the selections of Cole Reschny and Cullen Potter. Factor that in with the fact they added college star Ethan Wyttenbach in the fifth round of last year’s draft, you can see that the Flames have plenty of solid forward prospects.

That isn’t even considering recent college signing Jonathan Castagna, or 2024 second-round pick Andrew Basha. It also shouldn’t be forgotten that William Stromgren, Aydar Suniev, and Rory Kerins still have outside shots at becoming impactful NHLers.

Meanwhile, on top of Parekh, Brzustewicz, and Kuznetsov on the back end, the Flames have plenty of other blueliners who look like they have NHL potential in Henry Mews and Abram Wiebe, whom they acquired from the Vegas Golden Knights in January.

As you will have noticed, the vast majority of names listed above haven’t made impacts at the NHL level just yet. They still have a ways to go in their development, meaning things in Calgary won’t be getting turned around in the immediate future. That, of course, is the case for any rebuilding team. The positive is that the players mentioned above aren’t just middling prospects, hence why Scott Wheeler of The Athletic ranked the Flames as having the third-best prospect pool in the entire NHL. (from ‘Scott Wheeler: Calgary Flames are No. 3 in Scott Wheeler’s 2026 NHL prospect pool rankings,’ The Athletic 04/07/26).

Flames Could Be in Lottery Mix Next Year

Along with all the prospects we’ve already mentioned, the Flames, who have eight picks in the first three rounds of this year’s draft, could very well be back in this position once again next season. They will likely finish near the bottom of the NHL standings in 2026-27. If so, they will be in the mix to land the first-overall pick again, which would only add further to their embarrassment of riches.

As frustrating of a day as Tuesday was for Flames fans, the goal for the organization remains the same. As long as they continue to hit on draft picks, this team is turning things in the right direction, and are on the right path to becoming a contender, even if it isn’t happening as quickly as some would like.
