“Peter has worked in professional hockey for over 30 years,” said Don Maloney, Flames’ president of Hockey Operations. “His knowledge and experience are a welcomed addition to our staff.”
Calgary General Manager Craig Conroy says Hanlon will be “involved in all areas of hockey operations,” including player evaluation and recruitment, as well as strategy.
“Together with Assistant General Managers Dave Nonis and Brad Pascall, Peter will help us pursue our goal of bringing the Stanley Cup back to Calgary.”
According to a press release from the Flames, Hanlon began his managerial career with the Toronto Maple Leafs’ now-defunct American Hockey League franchise in St. John’s, N.L. He spent time with the AHL’s head office in SPringfield, Mass., then joined the Flames organization in 1997-98.
Hanlon also worked with Team Canada in a variety of capacities, including at the 2002 Olympics, various World Championships and the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.
According to the statement, Hanlon will assume his new duties on July 1.
The Flames finished the 2024-25 regular season with a 41-27-14 record and 96 points, fourth in the Pacific Division. The team fell short of making the playoffs, having less regulation wins than the St. Louis Blues, despite having the same amount of points.
Forward Nazem Kadri led the team in both goals and points with 35 and 67, respectively. Jonathan Huberdeau was second in points with 62 (28 goals and 34 assists), while defenseman MacKenzie Weegar led the team in assists with 39, to go along with his eight goals and 47 points.
