In advance of Monday night’s clash with the Winnipeg Jets, the Calgary Flames have made a roster move.
Per several reports, notably from The Athletic’s James Mirtle, the Flames have placed defenceman Daniil Miromanov on waivers. Should Miromanov clear waivers and be assigned to the American Hockey League’s Calgary Wranglers, only a $100,000 cap penalty from his $1.25 million cap hit would remain on the Flames’ books at the NHL level, and it would open a roster spot, presumably for the injured Martin Pospisil.
A product of Moskva, Russia, the 28-year-old Miromanov is a right shot defenceman. He was acquired by the Flames from the Vegas Golden Knights just prior to the 2024 trade deadline, along with a 2026 first-round pick and a 2024 third-round pick (used to select goaltender Kirill Zarubin) in exchange for Noah Hanifin.
A converted winger with good offensive instincts, Miromanov had a pretty unique path to the National Hockey League, going undrafted but grinding at a lot of different levels of hockey before he was signed by Vegas a free agent in March 2021. He made stops in the Czech Extraliga, the ECHL, the VHL and the KHL before getting his NHL deal.
He bounced between the Golden Knights and their AHL affiliate in Henderson for parts of three seasons before his trade to Calgary. At the AHL level, he was pretty strong offensively, posting 68 points over 95 AHL contests. At the NHL level, though, his impact has been much more sporadic. And his offensive outputs have been overshadowed by some defensive miscues – most recently, he wasn’t much of a deterrent to Vegas’ Jack Eichel on Tuesday night when Eichel whooshed past Miromanov to score the game-deciding goal.
Through 65 games with the Flames, Miromanov has five goals and 16 points. We’ll see what his fate will be when we get waivers news on Tuesday at noon MT.
