The Calgary Flames have placed forward Walker Duehr on waivers, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported Tuesday afternoon.
Duehr, 27, has one assist and has averaged just 8:48 of ice time in 16 games with the Flames this season. The Sioux Falls, South Dakota product is slated to become an unrestricted free agent this summer upon the conclusion of his current one-way contract, which carries an $825,000 NHL cap hit.
The Flames originally signed Duehr as an undrafted NCAA free agent from Minnesota State University – Mankato back in 2021. He previously cleared waivers in October and was assigned to the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers to begin the 2024-25 season.

Duehr skated on Calgary’s fourth line alongside Ryan Lomberg and Rory Kerins at practice on Tuesday (per Sportsnet’s Pat Steinberg), but with Jonathan Huberdeau absent and now this waiver news, it looks like the Flames might end up running with vastly different combinations when they return to action against the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday.
The 6’2″, 210-pound Duehr enjoyed a highly productive run with the Wranglers to begin the season, scoring 11 goals and 19 points in 20 games, but was unable to replicate that success in his fourth go-round with the Flames. The right-handed winger now has 19 points (nine goals, 10 assists) through 84 career games with the Flames.
It remains to be seen whether Duehr will clear waivers and, if he does, whether the Flames will assign him back to the Wranglers. Either way, it looks as though the Flames now have an open spot on their fourth line. While the natural plug-and-play option from the farm might be veteran Dryden Hunt, who appeared in 28 games with the Flames in 2023-24 and is currently the AHL’s leader in points, the more intriguing possibility is the Flames recalling William Stromgren, their 2021 second-round pick.
Other candidates include Clark Bishop, the Wranglers’ captain and a strong two-way forward; Martin Frk, a shoot-first veteran PP specialist; Sam Morton, who might be the closest analogue to Duehr on the farm; Adam Klapka, the gentle giant who already has 12 NHL games under his belt; and Sam Honzek, who made the Flames out of camp as a 19-year-old before being sent to the Wranglers after five games.
The Flames and their fans will find out whether Duehr makes it through waivers on Wednesday at 12:00 p.m. MT.
