Flames prospect roundup: Two Flames prospects earn finals trips

There’s a chance that three different Calgary Flames prospects will play in their respective leagues’ finals.

This is the Apr. 28 – May 5 edition of the Flames prospect roundup, where we look at how Calgary Flames prospects did this past week, specifically those at the junior and college levels. The American Hockey League prospects have their own article in the Wranglers recaps.

Let’s take a week that was!

Matvei Gridin

Last week, the Shawinigan Cataractes and Matvei Gridin fell to 2-0 in the series with the Rimouski Océanic, with the series shifting to Shawinigan.

With their backs against the wall, the Cataractes won Game 3 by a score of 5-2, with Gridin scoring the opening goal to cut the series lead in half. Game 4 saw the Cataractes tie up the series, as Isaac Ménard scored a goal early in double overtime. Gridin picked up an assist in this game.

The pivotal Game 5 also ended 3-2 in overtime, but this time in favour of the Océanic. However, Gridin picked up his eighth goal of the post-season to open the scoring. With the series shifting back to Shawinigan in a must-win game, they were able to force Game 7 by winning 5-1. Gridin was held off the scoresheet.

For all the marbles, the Cataractes and Océanic play in Rimouski on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. MT. If Gridin and the Cataractes win, they’ll face the Moncton Wildcats in the Québec Maritimes Junior Hockey League finals.

Andrew Basha

Nothing has changed on the Andrew Basha front, he’s yet to play in the playoffs. However, his Medicine Hat Tigers have advanced to the Western Hockey League Finals to take on the Spokane Chiefs.

First, they had to get past the Lethbridge Hurricanes. Game 3 was a high-scoring affair, with the teams combining for 13 goals, with the Tigers eventually winning 7-6 in overtime. The expected first overall pick in the 2026 draft, Gavin McKenna, picked up four assists.

In Game 4, the Tigers defeated the Hurricanes 5-3, as they scored four unanswered goals from the middle of the first period until the end of the second period. After two Hurricanes’ goals in the third period, McKenna iced it with an empty-netter.

Game 1 against the Spokane Chiefs is scheduled for Friday night at 7:00 p.m. MT.
