Flames select centre Cullen Potter at 32nd overall in the 2025 NHL Draft

The Calgary Flames have made their second selection of the 2025 NHL Draft. At 32nd overall, the Flames have selected centre Cullen Potter from the Arizona State University Sun Devils of the NCAA.

Potter was the 22nd-ranked North American skater by the NHL’s Central Scouting Service. He was ranked 17th by Daily Faceoff and 9th by FC Hockey.

The 18-year-old Potter is a left shot centre who also plays the wing listed at 5’10” and 172 pounds. A product of Hortonville, Wisconsin, he had 13 goals and 9 assists for 22 points in 35 games with Arizona State this season. He also represented the United States at the Under-18 Worlds.

Potter made the big decision to go to college early, and it paid off. He played around 20 minutes a night at ASU, and scouts were impressed with his play-driving abilities. He’s 5-foot-9, but his pure skill and ability to make things happen with the puck should keep him high in the draft conversation. Overall, I like his commitment to playing in all three zones, and he anticipates plays and gets himself where he needs to be better than most of the draft class. I think the ceiling is higher for Potter than many others around this part of the draft, but he needs to show he can handle the physical challenge. Fast-tracking to play at ASU early was an absolute genius move for his development and helped him push up draft boards.

Of note: Potter’s mom is Jenny Potter, a four-time Winter Olympian in women’s hockey.

The 32nd overall selection was originally allocated to the Florida Panthers, but the Flames received it from the Panthers as part of the Matthew Tkachuk trade. (The Flames also received Jonathan Huberdeau, MacKenzie Weegar and Cole Schwindt.)
