Daniil Tarasov has shown some potential in his NHL career, and now, he's set to join the Florida Panthers after a trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets, with the former third-round pick now set to backup one of the NHL's best goaltenders in Sergei Bobrovsky.
The Florida Panthers moved their goaltender of the future at the 2025 NHL trade deadline, landing Seth Jones in a deal for Spencer Knight, and with the backup spot open heading into the summer, they've now made a move to fix that.
According to insider Pierre LeBrun, the Panthers have now officially acquired Daniil Tarasov from the Columbus Blue Jackets, acquiring the 26-year old to be their likely backup for the 2025/26 campaign.
The former third-round pick has appeared in 65 games for the Blue Jackets dating back to 2021/22, and this past season he was solid, tallying a 3.54 GAA as well as an .881 save percentage, and while he won't be one of the top backups in the league, we've already seen that their backups don't get much time behind Sergei Bobrovsky.
With Jet Greaves taking over the role in Columbus, Tarasov was likely on the way out soon as an RFA this summer, and now, the Panthers get someone they can mold into being a cheap backup, potentially for years to come.
After their first Stanley Cup win, the Panthers let Anthony Stolarz walk to Toronto in free agency, and after going back-to-back in 2025, it appears that Vitek Vanacek is headed to free agency as well, and in the 26-year old Tarasov, the Panthers have seemingly found their backup for the next season or more.
