A few changes hit the Philadelphia Flyers’ roster ahead of Sunday’s matchup against the Carolina Hurricanes. The Flyers have placed winger Travis Konecny on injured reserve with a lower-body injury. Konecny was announced out day-to-day late last week. His IR placement will be retroactive to October 8th, which will force Konency to miss the Flyers’ next two games. He will be eligible to return ahead of Thursday’s matchup against the Detroit Red Wings.
Philadelphia recalled defenseman Oliver Bonk to fill the roster spot left by Konency. Bonk will help the Flyers fill out the blue line after Cameron York sustained a day-to-day injury and Rasmus Ristolainen was placed on injured reserve. Bonk scored two points in his NHL debut at the end of last season. He played one more game during the postseason but managed no scoring. The hot debut was a surprise after Bonk managed 19 points and a minus-14 in 46 games during his AHL rookie season.
Bonk will be an option as Philadelphia looks to improve on a league-worst offense to start the season. The Flyers have recorded the fewest goals-per-game in the NHL so far – averaging just 1.17 goals through six games.
A rookie addition won’t make up for the absence of Konecny, though. The 29 year old is the only Flyer with three points this year, scored through five games. He recorded 27 goals and 68 points in 77 games last season – a slight dip from the 76 points he managed in 2024-25. Konecny’s absence leaves holes throughout Philadelphia’s lineup. The Flyers have elevated Trevor Zegras to a top-line winger role, and added Noah Cates to the power-play, to fill those spots.
Philadelphia will hope those changes can help them weather the storm against the reigning Stanley Cup champions on Sunday. The Flyers’ schedule will lighten up in the next two games – with matchups against the Seattle Kraken and Detroit Red Wings.
