Tough news for one of the top players on the Philadelphia Flyers roster.

On Wednesday, the team announced that forward Tyson Foerster underwent successful surgery on his arm two days prior. The surgery came after he had additional testing and evaluation on an upper-body injury he suffered earlier this month.

The Flyers stated that Foerster is expected to make a full recovery but will be out for another five months.

Foerster was hurt in a game on Dec. 1 against the rival Pittsburgh Penguins. He injured himself while attempting a one-time on a power play in the second period. While in pain, he was able to skate off the ice before departing down the tunnel into the dressing room.

The original diagnosis was that the 23-year-old, who had scored earlier in that contest against the Pens, would be out 2-3 months due to the ailment. However, due to recent developments, that won’t be the case. Now, the Flyers are going to be without one of their better offensive weapons for the rest of the season. Not the most ideal circumstances for a team that is doing its best to push for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Even if Philadelphia makes it to the postseason, the Alliston, Ont. native most likely won’t be available to the later rounds, given the team makes it that far.

Barring any sort of miraculous rehab, Foerster’s season will end after just 21 games played. He also missed over a week’s worth of action due to a lower-body injury in November. He’s currently one of just two Flyers to have hit 10 goals this season, totaling 13 points.

The Flyers (17-9-6) are third in the Metropolitan Division, four points back of the first-place Carolina Hurricanes.
