FN’s 2025 Flames summer prospect rankings – #11: Sam Honzek

Sam Honzek is a recent first rounder that Calgary Flames fanbase is eager to see what he does next. His numbers over the last handful of years have been very impressive and the only roadblocks he’s really faced have been due to injuries. This past season, he seemed to have a blank slate and his performance in training camp earned him an opening night roster spot with the Flames. He didn’t quite hit a permanent NHL spot due to another injury setback, but he’s right on that cusp.

This summer, Honzek comes in at number 11 in the FlamesNation team’s 2025 prospect rankings.

Sam Honzek

Left wing/centre, shoots left
Born Nov. 12, 2004 (age 20) in Trencin, Slovakia
6’4”, 194 pounds
Drafted in the first round (16th overall) by Calgary in the 2023 NHL Draft.

Sam Honzek played most of his minor career back in his home country of Slovakia and in various tournaments representing his country on the national stage. His first games in North America were with the Vancouver Giants in the 2022-23 season. He ended up playing two years in the WHL before making a two game debut with the Calgary Wranglers in 2023-24.

In his first year with the Giants, he played 43 games and put up 56 points, consisting of 23 goals and 33 assists. The next season in 2023-24, his season was limited due to injury but he still played in 33 games, captaining the Giants and still averaging just below a point per game with 31 points. He didn’t earn any points in his two game preview with the Wranglers but it was still motivating to see a first round pick on Calgary ice for some game action.

The 2024-25 season was Honzek’s first full professional season. It started with five games with the Flames, but unfortunately no points at the NHL level just yet. After suffering an upper-body injury early in the season, he needed a few weeks to recover before returning. He came back to game action in early November with the Wranglers and put up his first goal of the season in his first game.

Most of Honzek’s games were played on a line with Wranglers captain Clark Bishop and a rotating winger depending on who was making a case for more playing time among the AHL prospect pool. Towards the midway mark of the season and around when Bishop earned his NHL call-up, Honzek started getting opportunities at centre. He showed comfort and improvement at this position the more shifts he played, and he reiterated at the end of the season that he is ready to play wherever the organization would like him.

His season finished up with 52 games played, eight goals, 13 assists and 21 points in total. Honzek played in both playoff games as well, but did not put up any points.

FlamesNation’s Managing Editor, Ryan Pike, shared his thoughts on Honzek’s season saying,

“Honzek had a weird season, bouncing between the NHL and AHL (and centre and the wing). Early in the year, he had a lot of “What am I supposed to be doing in this situation?” energy and had some tough outings, but he seemed to figure out his details as the season wore on. He didn’t play a ton of centre and his size and skill were more evident on the wing, but he had some good outings up the middle late in the season, so we’ll see where that goes.”

Expectations for 2025-26

Honzek feels very close to that NHL emergence, but it might not be exactly a full-time gig in the 2025-26 season. He could very well make the team out of camp again but it feels like some extra time to fine-tune his game, especially at centre in the AHL will do his development well in the long term. Next year may shake out to be a split season for Honzek. When he’s hot, he’s in the NHL. When he might be the extra guy in the press box, send him to the Wranglers to get his reps and ice time.

Honzek is signed through the end of the 2027-28 season before he becomes a restricted free agent in 2028. Honzek is still in the early days of his contract and has a lot of upside to his game. Once he catches up to these professional leagues, he could be an impact player who graduates to the NHL in the next few seasons.
