Former 35-goal scorer Viktor Arvidsson's time with the Oilers is likely over, as NHL insider Elliotte Friedman revealed both sides know it's time for a change.

The Edmonton Oilers understand that if they're ever going to win the Stanley Cup, something needs to change. The Oilers played an excellent season, but their underlying vulnerabilities were exposed when they were needed most.

Goaltending broke down under pressure, their offense disappeared in the last two games of the playoffs, and the absence of Zach Hyman and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins cost too much to overcome.

With $11.92 million in projected cap space, as per PuckPedia, the Oilers are in a corner. Most of it will probably be used to sign restricted free agent Evan Bouchard, whose contract might take up most of their flexibility.

Bowman did mention big changes were expected with the forward group

That leaves general manager Stan Bowman with tough choices to make. Bowman said in his post-season press conference that the biggest changes are likely to happen up front and between the pipes.

But to make those upgrades, cap room must be wiped out, so buyouts or trades could be on the horizon. One name that is in the saddle is Viktor Arvidsson, who did not live up to expectations.

Both Arvidsson and the Oilers believe it is time for a fresh start, something the Calgary Flames had also been dealing with, regarding Rasmus Andersson, per NHL insider Elliotte Friedman.
