Connor Brown was a key piece of the Oilers last season, and now he's opened up on why they went with Pink Pony Club as their post-win anthem.
The 2024/25 campaign for the Edmonton Oilers was almost a historic one, but at the final hurdle they once again fell to the Florida Panthers, losing in the Stanley Cup Finals in six games, falling to the Eastern Conference heavyweight for the second straight season.
There were some memorable moments along the way of course, and with Chappell Roan's hit 'Pink Pony Club' playing them home after every victory, it was certainly one to remember for the players as well.
Now, former Oilers Connor Brown has revealed the origin story behind using that as their victory anthem, revealing that it was originally meant to be a secret, but once it got out, the team embraced it.
'Honestly, yeah, we were keeping the whole thing hush hush,» Brown said. «But the reality of the story is we were out for dinner in San Jose. There is a girl who is playing on the piano and she started signing Pink Pony Club and all the boys were bobbing their heads and we needed a new 'win' song. And so we were like, 'Oh, this song is good.' We all hadn't heard it. We won the next game, put it on after the game and that was it. And the boys were having fun with it. And everyone was asking about it during the playoffs. Like 'What's the story?' And we were keeping the lips sealed. Thought the imagination would be a little bit more funny.'
Unfortunately for the fans who also embraced it, the Oilers simply fell short against a dominant opponent once again, and now, the team will look to take their new-look lineup back to the Stanley Cup Finals as Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl look to break the Stanley Cup drought for Edmonton and for Canada.
