Former Winnipeg Jets star Dustin Byfuglien has taken up the sport of fishing, and did so well that he placed in the top-25 at the Kenora Bass Invitational.
During the dog days of summer, conversation turns from hockey to fishing for Manitobans, as they travel to and from the province and northwestern Ontario's thousands of lakes.
For former Winnipeg Jets great Dustin Byfuglien, that interest has become more than a pastime.
The most iconic player in Jets history, by many measures, Dustin Byfuglien is often found on a Minnesota lake in his home state, and occasionally wetting a line on Lake of the Woods in northwestern Ontario.
This past summer, Byfuglien partnered with Sioux Narrows resident Mike Reid for the Kenora Bass Invitational, where they finished 25th among 141 teams.
Strung out over three days, their largemouth bass haul totaled 49.25 pounds, short 7.24 pounds of the top title winner.
He alongside his partner Mike Reid of Sioux Narrows finished 25th overall in the Kenora Bass Invitational. There were a total of 141 teams. Their large-mouth bass totals for the three days were 49.25 which put them 7.24 behind top spot on the leaderboard.
The crowd's cheers made it evident that Byfuglien still holds a place in the fans' hearts despite his hockey years being far behind. He joked that he only gets on the ice nowadays to 'chase my kids.'
Byfuglien wasn't the only retired NHL player at the competition. Kenora's own homeboy, Mike Richards, a two-time Stanley Cup champion, finished third in the overall standings with his brother, proving hockey skills could well be translated to the water.
