The Vegas Golden Knights have signed defenseman Rasmus Andersson to a seven-year contract extension. According to Elliotte Friedman, the deal is worth $8.5 million per season.
The deal runs through the 2032-33 season and comes just under six months after Vegas acquired him from Calgary in a January blockbuster.
The extension had been widely expected since the trade itself. Vegas gave up a significant package to land Andersson — Zach Whitecloud, prospect Abram Wiebe, a 2027 first-round pick and a conditional 2028 second-rounder — and reports at the time indicated a long-term deal was part of the understanding between the sides, even though it couldn’t be formalized immediately due to cap constraints.
Andersson had also been rumored to be steering his market toward Vegas specifically in the lead-up to the deal. There was no doubt he wanted to stay.
Andersson, 29, has developed into one of the league’s better puck-moving, offense-first defensemen. He spent parts of 10 seasons with Calgary, but as the Flames were looking to retool, it became clear he was likely going to be traded. Andersson posted 17 goals and 30 assists for 47 points in 81 games, then added six assists in 22 playoff games as the Golden Knights made a run to the Stanley Cup Final.
For his career, he has 278 points in 617 regular-season games.
His ability to log heavy minutes, quarterback a power play made him someone the Golden Knights want to keep. That they moved Pavel Dorofeyev in an effor to afford Andersson shows just how much they wanted him. The move pushes Vegas roughly $5 million over the $104 million salary cap for now, leaving general manager Kelly McCrimmon to do some house cleaning.
