A heavyweight brawl between Boston Bruins' Jeffrey Viel and Washington Capitals' Dylan McIlrath nearly upstaged Alex Ovechkin’s march toward NHL history on Tuesday night at TD Garden.
The Bruins and Capitals had already traded goals when the two veterans dropped the gloves late in the second period, with the scoreboard reading 2-1 in favor of Washington.
The fight lasted nearly a full minute, drawing roars from the crowd as both players traded heavy punches without going down.
McIlrath, listed at 6-foot-5 and 232 pounds, used his reach early to pull Viel’s helmet off. Viel responded in kind and removed McIlrath's helmet with a punch.
While Capitals' McIlrath landed more punches overall, Bruins' Viel connected with several solid late blows.
