The NHL's return to the Winter Olympics has fans buzzing, and the Dallas Stars are set to have a strong presence in Milano Cortina.
For the first time since 2014, NHL stars will compete on the Olympic stage, and several Dallas players are projected to play key roles for their countries. Others will use the February break to recharge for the playoff push.
On the Finnish roster, Miro Heiskanen, Mikko Rantanen, and Roope Hintz are expected to lead a team aiming to defend its historic 2022 gold medal.
"Finland's success last time was no fluke, we're coming back for more,"a Finnish coach told NHL.com.
Former Star Mikael Granlund is also among the projected forwards.
For Canada, Thomas Harley could be a surprise addition after impressing at the recent 4 Nations Face-Off. His performance earned him consideration for an Olympic spot as Canada looks for its first gold since 2014.
Team USA should feature Jason Robertson and Jake Oettinger. Both shined at the 4 Nations event and are expected to join Connor Hellebuyck in forming one of the most formidable goaltending tandems in the tournament.
As TSN noted,
"Oettinger's playoff composure makes him an ideal choice for the short, intense Olympic format."
Meanwhile, Stars not heading to Italy will enjoy a rare three-week midseason break, with only four games scheduled in February, all at home. I think that kind of rest could be a huge advantage down the stretch.
The Olympic men's tournament begins February 11, with Team USA opening against Latvia. The gold medal game will be played on February 22 - exactly 46 years after the "Miracle on Ice."
