Hurricanes goaltenders join short list with rare accomplishment

The Carolina Hurricanes are one of the hottest teams in the NHL of late, winning six of their last seven games and securing 13 of a possible 14 standings points in that span.

The goaltenders Carolina has employed this season have been a huge part of that success, saving a collective 89.8% of shots on goal.

But there's one thing the Hurricanes' goalies have accomplished this year that hasn't been seen in 22 years.

The team is just the fourth in NHL history and the first since the 2002-03 St. Louis Blues to have four or more rostered goalies record at least one shutout each in a single season.

That Blues team is the only one on the list to have five separate goaltenders accomplish the feat. The 1980-81 Montreal Canadiens and 1972-73 Boston Bruins round out the group of distinguished teams.

Carolina, who has recorded seven shutouts this season, has leaned heavily on its No. 1 option in net, Pyotr Kochetkov. He's tied for ninth in the league in wins (18) and owns 12th outright in GAA (2.48).

The Hurricanes currently sit second in the Metropolitan Division and clearly have the depth to give teams fits on offense once the Stanley Cup Playoffs roll around.
