The Carolina Hurricanes have placed forward Noah Philp on conditional waivers for the purpose of reassigning him to the American Hockey League.

Philp is now available to be claimed by 29 other teams in the league over the course of the next 24 hours. The only two teams unable to claim him are the San Jose Sharks and Vegas Golden Knights, as they have reached the maximum of 50 standard player contracts, and would need to move a player to do so. Philp’s $750,000 cap hit would also not fit on the Edmonton Oilers and Montreal Canadiens current NHL rosters, so they would need to make a corresponding move to claim him.

With the NHL season past the month of October, the waiver priority order is determined by the inverse order of the standings, which means the Vancouver Canucks currently have first say on claiming Philp, while the Colorado Avalanche are last in that order.

Philp has already found himself on the waiver wire once this season, as he joined the Hurricanes as a waiver claim from the Oilers at the end of December. With Philp hailing from Canmore, Alberta, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Oilers attempted to reclaim him, although as mentioned before, they’d need to make the salary cap work as they currently only have $425,000 in space.

Philp is on the waiver wire again because he is returning from injury, but the Hurricanes are the 23-player maximum on their NHL roster, and are unable to activate him from injured reserve. To do so, Carolina either needed to send another player to the AHL or Philp, and they appear to have selected Philp. Ideally for Carolina, this means he’ll play for their AHL affiliate, the Chicago Wolves, but it may mean he plays for a different NHL team if he is claimed.

Philp has two goals and one assist for three points in 17 games this season between the Oilers and Hurricanes, with all three points coming in his 15-game stint with Edmonton, as he went pointless in his two games with Carolina.

All three players who were on waivers yesterday (Zach Aston-Reese & Brendan Gaunce of the Columbus Blue Jackets and Dakota Mermis of the Toronto Maple Leafs) cleared and were assigned to their team’s respective AHL affiliates.
