The Carolina Hurricanes announced on Monday morning that they have placed veteran left winger Taylor Hall on injured reserve.

Hall, who put up five points in eight games to start the season, is out on a week-to-week basis after he sustained an upper-body injury that forced him out of a key divisional showdown against the Washington Capitals.

The No. 1 overall pick from the 2010 NHL Draft has been an impactful presence for the Hurricanes since he was acquired from the Chicago Blackhawks in January 2025 as part of the blockbuster three-way trade that also sent Mikko Rantanen to Carolina.

While the Hurricanes moved on from Rantanen in a subsequent blockbuster move, Hall stuck around and was instrumental in the team capturing its second Stanley Cup championship in 2026 as one-third of a dominant second line that took over the postseason comprised of Hall, Logan Stankoven and Jackson Blake.

In parts of three seasons in Raleigh, Hall has 71 points on 30 goals and 41 assists in 119 regular season games to go with 25 points in 34 postseason games. Hall is in the second season of a three-year contract with Carolina that carries a salary cap hit of $3.167 million.

Hall’s absence is far from the only one the Hurricanes are dealing with up front. Carolina is missing a key forward from each of its four lines, as Seth Jarvis has yet to make his debut this year after offseason shoulder surgery. Last year’s Conn Smythe Trophy winner, Jordan Staal, is out for a while with a calf injury, and fourth line center Mark Jankowski, currently in the midst of a six-game goal streak, was sent back to Raleigh in the middle of Carolina’s long road trip for further evaluation of his own injury issue.

Despite the injury issues, the Canes have done well to hold off a Stanley Cup hangover. Carolina saw a seven-game winning streak come to an end in Alberta against the Calgary Flames on Sunday night, but they still have a two-point cushion atop the Metropolitan Division with a record of 7-2-1.
