The Carolina Hurricanes announced Saturday that the club has signed pending unrestricted free agent goaltender Frederik Andersen to a one-year extension. The deal carries a $2.75-million average annual value and upwards of $750,000 in performance bonuses.
Per PuckPedia, Andersen is currently in the final year of a two-year contract that has a $3.4-million cap hit.
Limited to 22 regular-season appearances in 2024-25 after undergoing knee surgery, Andersen put together a 13-8-1 record with an .899 save percentage, 2.50 goals-against average, and one shutout. In the postseason, Andersen has won three of four contests while posting a .945 save percentage and 1.32 goals-against average. Of note, Andersen is currently sidelined with an undisclosed injury but is trending toward a return in the second round of the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs where the Hurricanes will take on the Washington Capitals.
Joining the Hurricanes in the 2021 offseason as an unrestricted free agent, Andersen’s time in Carolina has been a mix of strong play and untimely injuries. In his first year, Andersen missed the entire postseason due to a lower-body injury, then another 29 games the following season due to a similar ailment. In 2023-24, he was sidelined for 49 games due to a blood clot issue, while this season he was out for 38 games due to a knee injury.
A veteran of 521 career contests counting stops with the Anaheim Ducks, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Hurricanes, the 35-year-old Danish-born netminder has pieced together a 311-135-54 career showing coupled with a .915 save percentage, 2.55 goals-against average, and 28 shutouts.
Originally chosen by the Hurricanes in the seventh round of the 2010 NHL Draft, Andersen did not earn a contract with the club and ultimately re-entered the draft pool. The 2012 NHL Draft then saw him chosen in the third round by the Ducks.
