
The 2025-26 Olympic break is approaching, as well as the trade deadline. With the timing of the season, rumors will pop up everywhere, and a recent one has the Montreal Canadiens and Edmonton Oilers rumored to be on a deal. The Canadiens would trade forward Patrik Laine to the Oilers in exchange for forward Andrew Mangiapane. It’s a trade that would benefit not only the two teams but the two players who could use a change of scenery.
The issue is that both have a no-trade clause; Laine’s has a 10-team no-trade list. Laine carries a $8.70M cap hit while Mangiapane has a $3.6M cap hit. He has been out since Oct. 16 with a core muscle injury for which he underwent surgery. Laine is expected back after the Olympic break. Things haven’t gone well for Laine in Montreal; in 57 games over two seasons, he has 34 points on 20 goals and 14 assists. He’s a -17 with 15 power-play goals and five game-winning goals. This season, in five games before the injury, he had an assist and was a minus-three. Mangiapane, in 47 games this season, has 12 points on six goals and six assists. It’s his first season with Edmonton, and he’s a -19 with a game-winning goal.
The Winnipeg Jets drafted Laine second overall in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. He has played for the Jets, Columbus Blue Jackets and Canadiens. In 306 games with Winnipeg, he had 250 points on 140 goals and 110 assists. He was an even in plus/minus with 52 power-play goals and 18 game-winning goals. In 174 games for Columbus, he had 138 points on 64 goals and 74 assists. He was a -58 with 18 power-play goals and eight game-winning goals. In 537 career games, he has 422 points on 224 goals and 198 assists. He’s a -75 with 85 power-play goals and 31 game-winning goals.
The Calgary Flames drafted Mangiapane 166th overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. In nine seasons, he has played for the Flames, Washington Capitals and Oilers. In seven seasons with the Flames, he’s played in 417 games, recording 215 points on 109 goals and 106 assists. He was a +52 with 14 power-play goals, four shorthanded goals, and 16 game-winning goals. In 81 games for the Capitals in one season, he had 28 points on 14 goals and 14 assists. He was an even in plus/minus with a shorthanded goal and three game-winning goals. In 545 career games, he has 255 points on 129 goals and 126 assists. He is a +33 with 14 power-play goals, five shorthanded goals, and 20 game-winning goals.
